Bali Is Open!  6 Things To Know About Getting Here

 February 21, 2022

We know that lots of you have been waiting for some good news regarding the Indonesian borders so we are very excited that international flights into Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport have resumed as of February 2022! This means that we will be able to welcome a lot more of you to Scuba Junkie Penida now that Bali is open!  So far, flights have arrived in Bali airport from Japan and from Singapore, and more airlines will resume fights soon.

In this post we hope to provide with an overview of what's required to obtain your tourist visa and what the entry requirements and quarantine procedures are.  Quarantine can be as short as two nights, so we hope that this makes the prospect of travel to Bali more achievable for many of you.  As always with travel rules during the pandemic, things can change quickly and we will update this post as and when we hear of any changes.

Prior to Departure - Get Your eVisa

All visitors to Indonesia need to obtain an eVisa in advance. Even though Bali is open, the free visa and 30 day tourist visas on arrival are still currently suspended.

Visas can only be obtained through an agent and there are some links on this page, although these are not the only agents who can process the visa application for you.

Entering into Bali you need to have a B211A TOURIST visa.

It is possible to enter Indonesia via Jakarta or Manado, but not with a tourist visa (visitors need business visas for these entry points).  Therefore, if the purpose of your visit is tourism, then you need to plan to enter via Bali.

Visa Application

To apply for the visa you need to provide the visa agent with the following:

  • A copy of your passport (main page and front cover), the passport must have 12 months validity from the date you plan to enter
  • A photo of yourself
  • Proof of full vaccination
  • You may be required to show your bank statement in English showing at least US$1,500 (or equivalent)
  • Proof of travel insurance with a minimum coverage of USD$25,000 for Coronavirus-related emergencies.
  • Personal details: home address, contact details, emergency contact details
  • Address of where you will stay in Bali after quarantine
  • Payment to start the application process.

In our experience the B211A tourist visas cost approximately Rp 3,500,000 per person (this is approximately USD 245, AUD 350, GBP 180 , EUR 220).

Applications can take up to 14 working days.

Visa agents strongly advise that you only book a flight once you have received your visa.

Once you receive your visa you have 90 days to use it for a single entry into Bali. Once you enter, the visa is valid for 60 days and can be extended up to 4 times for 30 days each time.

Arriving in Bali - Entry requirements

To enter Bali you need to fulfil the below requirements in addition to having your B211A tourist eVisa. You will be asked to show these at the documents check point at Bali arrivals hall and it is recommended to have printed copies available.  Your airline may also ask to see these when you check in for your flight.

Documents, Forms and Apps

  • Have a return or onwards ticket
  • Proof (in physical or digital format) of full vaccination with the vaccine received at least 14 days prior to departure
  • A negative PCR test result in English, with sample taken within 2x24 (eg 48) hours of your flight departure time (including infants).
  • A confirmed (paid) quarantine booking from government approved hotels (see the quarantine section below).  The quarantine time that applies for Indonesian citizens and foreign nationals is as follows:
    • Fully Vaccinated & Booster: 3 Days/2 Nights
    • Fully vaccinated: 5 Days/4 Nights

Note: If travelling with children under 18 years of age who are not vaccinated, their quarantine time will follow the parent's case.

  • Have the Peduli Lindungi application installed on your mobile
  • Complete the eHAC within the Peduli Lindungi app. eHAC is "Electronic Health Alert Card" which is used for travel when both entering and traveling within Indonesia. Dependents are able to be added on your profile, if applicable.
  • Fill out the eCustoms declaration form(This replaces the paper form that you used to fill out in the arrivals hall).
  • Quarantine Precision App ( at the time of writing, this does not seem to be required for Bali arrivals)
  • Proof of health insurance with coverage up to USD25,000 for coronavirus related emergencies.
  • Proof of confirmation of accommodation after quarantine (this is different to the Quarantine accommodation)

First PCR Test

You will undergo a PCR test upon arrival at Bali International Airport and you will receive the result once you're at your hotel.

On Arrival - Quarantine

Many hotels in several areas of Bali are available to book for your quarantine period.  There are two types of quarantine hotel: In-room only quarantine and "quarantine bubble" hotels.

When booking a quarantine hotel and considering your onward travel to Nusa Penida after your quarantine ends, Sanur is the closest area to the harbour where the fast boats to Penida depart from.

In-room Quarantine Hotels

As it states, in these hotels you would be confined to your room for the duration of the quarantine.

Quarantine Bubble hotels

In the "quarantine bubble hotels" you are not confined to your room, and may use the facilities in the designated "bubble areas" of the resort. The facilities in the bubble area will vary from hotel to hotel, but based on people's experiences of it they can include use of restaurant, pool and workout facilities. Check with the hotels directly to find out exactly what is accessible.

You can find a full list of all government approved Bali quarantine hotels here.  Quarantine package prices include your hotel, three meals per day, PCR tests and transport from the airport to the hotel.

When you make a booking, you must make sure that you receive a booking confirmation from the hotel, as this will need to be shown when you check in for your flight and when you arrive in Bali airport.

Second PCR tests

Your subsequent PCR test will be on day 3 or 4 (depending on your quarantine duration), these are taken at your quarantine hotel.

  • For those undertaking 3D/2N quarantine, the test will be done on the morning of day 3, and you can then leave later that day after you get a negative result.
  • For those undertaking the 5D/4N quarantine, the test will be done on day 4, and you can then leave after you get the negative result on day 5.

You may leave your room once the negative test results of all quarantine guests sharing the same room are returned.

In case of a positive result, the you would have to isolate for a minimum of 7 days at one of the Isolation Hotel Healthcare facilities assigned by the government and you will be required to bear the cost for this.

Travel To Nusa Penida

As we mentioned before - BALI IS OPEN! So after you're released from your quarantine hotel you can travel on to Nusa Penida! We can arrange a taxi for you from the hotel to the fast boat departure point and as always, we can reserve the fast boat tickets for you.

You do not need to show your negative test results to board the boat.  As the time of checkout from your hotel will be unknown (because you need to wait for your negative test result), you can just keep in touch with us on the day and we can book a boat at the last minute for you.

At the moment, the last boat departing Sanur leaves at 5:20pm so there shouldn't be any issue getting to the island on the day you are released from quarantine.  You can start diving the next day!!

Covid Safety in Indonesia

General Rules

Unlike in a lot of countries now, in Indonesia it's still mandatory to wear a face mask / face covering when outside of your home (or hotel room).  Depending on the number of cases, different levels of community restrictions are imposed on businesses (these community restrictions are known as "PPKM" here).  Even when the higher restriction levels are in place, we are allowed to operate at reduced capacity and restaurants / cafes are allowed to operate on a dine-in basis.

Resort and Diving

Here at Scuba Junkie Penida we have covid-19 safety measures in place and are CHSE certified to ensure the safety of you and our staff.  You can read all of the details about our safety measures here.

For those of you who already have dive packages booked with us, you still have up until December 31st 2023 to use your booking, but hopefully now that Bali is open and tourist visas being available again we will see you way before then.

For those of you who have not got a package booked yet - Check them out!

Traveling Home

We advise you to check with your airline about the requirements for testing for your flight home / onward travel.  It's important to check both for your airline and for the airport that you may have to transit through, and to check regularly as rules can change often.

It's not possible to get PCR or rapid antigen (lateral flow) tests on Nusa Penida, but you can get them in Sanur on mainland Bali (where the fast boats from Penida arrive).  PCR test results are usually back within 24h and rapid antigen test results with 20 minutes.  You need to factor this in to your planning for your trip home.   If a PCR test is needed for your onward travel then you need to plan for a night in Bali while you await the result.

If needed we can arrange your dive package so that you can return back to Bali straight after your last dives, which means that you can get a test when you arrive in Sanur.
