Check out some of our favourite sunset spots and get yourself some insider tips for getting to and enjoying your time at each one.

The Iconic Viewpoint Sunset: Kelingking Beach

Burrowed into the south-west cliffs of Nusa Penida, Kelingking Beach is renowned for its unique landscape crafted by the elements making it a perfect spot to watch the sunset on Nusa Penida. The towering limestone cliffs plunge dramatically into the ocean below, resembling the shape of a T-Rex head which is what makes it such an iconic spot. As the sun begins to set, it casts a warm glow over the rugged terrain and the cliff formation becomes a silhouette against the vibrant hues of the evening sky.

Getting there

From Scuba Junkie Penida, it takes approximately 45 minutes to reach the breathtaking Kelingking Beach. Taxis are available to book for a convenient ride for 550,000 IDR which includes the return trip and the driver waiting for as long as you need. Alternatively, scooters are available to hire from nearby places for approx 80,000 IDR, if you fancy a more adventurous journey.

Islander Tips

There are cafes at the top of the cliff selling young coconuts, soft drinks and beers so you don't need to bring anything with you.

Arrive around 90 minutes before sunset if you also want to make the hike down to the beach and if you're taking this option, wear sturdy shoes!

This viewpoint is included on our island tour when you book a dive & stay package with us.

The Classic Beach Sunset: Crystal Bay

One of the most well-known spots to watch the sunset on Nusa Penida from is Crystal Bay, situated on the west coast of the island. A small island lies in the heart of the bay and it is surrounded by lush greenery with a view of Ceningan island’s cliffs. Crystal Bay’s lapping waves make for a beautiful reflective surface for that perfect sunset shot as the sky transforms showing off a fiery, golden glow.

There are local warungs on the beachfront serving up Indonesian favourites such as sate ayam & nasi goreng as well as soft drinks, coconuts and beers.

Islander Tips

If you plan to buy food and drinks while you watch the incredible sunset then take some IDR cash with you.

Be careful when swimming – Stay close to the beach and do not swim out to the island as currents can be strong.  Arrive earlier if you fancy a pre-sunset snorkel (snorkel gear can be hired at the beach).

There is a parking area and public restrooms for your convenience!

The Adventure Sunset: Smoky Beach (Pasih Andus)

Smoky Beach (local name: Pasih Andus) is a must-visit for adventuring sunset enthusiasts. Located on the west coast of Nusa Penida, the jagged sloping cliff provides an unobstructed, panoramic view of the setting sun on the open horizon.

The unique charm of this location lies in the dynamic interaction where the land meets the sea, as especially during high tide, waves dramatically crash into the rocks below creating thrilling eruptions of sea spray that soar into the air. This dramatic natural spectacle adds an exhilarating element to the vibrant colours of the sky.

Getting There

From Scuba Junkie Penida, it takes approximately 40 minutes by taxi or scooter to reach this spot. Taxis are available to book for 550,000 IDR return.  If you opt to hire a scooter, it’s important to note that the final 7 minutes of the journey involve navigating a rocky, unpaved road which requires confidence and experience in handling scooters.

Upon arrival, a 10-minute walk down the hill leads to the stunning viewpoint for the sunset on Nusa Penida.

Islander Tips

Also – sturdy shoes and a torch are advisable!

The Budget Friendly Sunset: Toyapakeh / Banjar Nyuh Harbour

An unassuming spot to watch the sunset on Nusa Penida is Toyapakeh / Banjar Nyuh harbour. This simple but captivating spot is on the North-West corner of the island just requires you to take a leisurely stroll along the jetty which extends out over the ocean.

It’s a great spot for watching the fish dart around beneath the crystal-clear surface just as the sky is turning golden. Occasionally dolphins are seen playing and you can watch the harbour come to life under the evening sun as local fishing boats return from their day out on the ocean, adding a touch of authenticity to the scene. As the sun begins to disappear behind the neighbouring island of Nusa Lembongan it creates a striking silhouette while painting the sky with a golden glow.

From Scuba Junkie Penida, it’s just a 10-minute leisurely beachfront stroll to the jetty – no driving necessary. Start the walk the same way as you would when getting onto our dive boats and then turn left when you reach the beach.

Islander Tips

If you want to enjoy any drinks or snacks for your sunset experience, it's essential to grab them beforehand from a nearby local minimart as the harbour kiosks will likely be closed for the evening.

If you’re departing Sanur for Nusa Penida with 5pm fast boat, sit near the back of the boat as you’ll get this sunset view as your boat arrives to dock at Nusa Penida!

The Upscale Sunset: Clifftop Restaurants

Perched atop the North-West Cliffs of Nusa Penida are two restaurant / bars offering a sunset on Nusa Penida in a beautiful setting with dining and cocktails:  Amok Sunset and AMARTA Penida.  They provide sweeping panoramic views across the channel to the neighbouring Nusas Lembongan and Ceningan. Both locations feature infinity pools, dining areas and create idyllic settings for capturing stunning photographs with the sunset as a full, breathtaking backdrop. Whilst both venues share similarities, they each offer unique features.

AMARTA Penida features the symmetrical stone “Bali gates”, inviting visitors to capture that ionic Bali photo with an impressive Mt Agung backdrop and also provides tiered seating for a unique viewing experience.

Amok Sunset offers specific spots to get your Instagram-worthy shots and also has 3 unique “nests” available to book creating the ultimate vantage point for unparalleled views and a romantic hideaway ambiance.

These locations may be a bit more upscale in terms of pricing but the elevated experience each has to offer makes them worth every penny for a memorable sunset experience.

Both locations have a bit of an adventurous, unpaved approach, so only drive a scooter if you’re confident (and not planning on drinking all the cocktails!).
